What counts as bespoke

Bespoke usually means the order is built, not just picked

A standard order is one item into a right-sized mailer. Everything below takes longer than that, and the honest way to price it is to say so.

Kits and bundles assembled from several SKUs and sold as one unit. Subscription boxes, where the same pack repeats at volume against a send date. Gift packs and hampers, often seasonal and often with presentation that matters more than speed. Branded unboxing: tissue, sleeves, stickers, a card or a flyer. Fragile items that need more than a mailer. Personalisation, where something in the pack changes per order.

All of it is ordinary warehouse work. What makes it bespoke is that the time per order is no longer the same for every order, so a single per-order price would either overcharge the simple ones or lose money on the complicated ones.

Cost

What each piece costs, from the published rate card

These are the same rates shown on the rate card. They sit on top of the pick and pack rate, which starts at 85p per order.

WorkRateWhat it covers
Kitting and bundlingFrom 50p per kitBuilding one saleable unit out of several SKUs, including subscription boxes
Fragile or gift wrappingFrom 30pWrapping, extra protection and presentation inside the outer pack
Custom or branded packagingFrom 15pPacking into your own box or mailer rather than a standard one
Inserts and flyers5p per insertCards, flyers, samples and thank you notes added to the pack
Quality inspection on goods-inQuoted per SKUChecking incoming stock item by item before it is booked in
Additional item in the same order25p, 22p or 20pFalls with volume, on the same bands as the pick and pack rate

Anything genuinely outside that list is quoted per job before any work happens. We do not invent a rate afterwards and put it on the invoice, which is the single most common complaint we hear about the providers people leave.

Subscription boxes

Subscription box fulfilment: a build, not a rush

The work in a subscription box sits in the build, not in the picking, and it is predictable: the same pack, a known quantity, a known send date. That means it can be built ahead of the send window rather than fought through on the morning of it.

What makes that possible is having the parts in the building in time. Send us the contents and the packaging with enough margin, tell us the send date and the quantity, and the build is scheduled against it. The failure mode is always the same: one component arrives two days before the send date and the whole run compresses into the last morning.

How a subscription box is priced here. Each box is a kit, from 50p per kit to build, plus the normal pick and pack charge per order from the published rate card. Branded boxes or mailers are packed from 15p, and inserts such as a monthly card or leaflet are 5p each. There is no minimum run, so a first box of a few dozen subscribers is priced the same way as a box of a few thousand.

What we need from you for each run: the contents list per box variant, the packaging, the send date and the quantity, and any inserts. Subscription orders that come through your store arrive over the same integration as your other orders, so a recurring box and a one-off order share one stock pool and one invoice.

Seasonal

Gift packs and seasonal runs

Seasonal work has a deadline nobody can move, so the planning is worth more than the packing. Packaging for a Christmas run wants to be with us in October, not December, and the build wants a date in the diary rather than a hope.

Two things are worth knowing before you plan a peak run. Our peak surcharge is 20p per order in November and December, published on the rate card rather than sprung on you, and the dispatch cut-off stays at 2pm on a working day and 1pm on Saturday through the whole season. The wider picture of what changes in the last quarter is set out in the Q4 cost calendar.

Branding

Branded unboxing without a custom box

Custom printed boxes are the expensive way to look considered, and for most sellers under a few thousand orders a month they are not the right first spend. Tissue, a sleeve, a sticker and a printed card do most of the visual work at 5p to 30p an order rather than at the cost of a print run and the storage of a pallet of boxes you are then committed to.

If you do want your own packaging, send it in. It is stored like any other stock at the normal storage rate, and we pack into it.

Getting it quoted

What we need from you to price it

Four things, and a quote comes back within one working day, itemised.

  • What the finished unit contains, SKU by SKU, including the packaging.
  • How many, and whether that is a one-off run or a repeating one.
  • Any date it has to hit, such as a send window or a launch.
  • Anything unusual about the product itself. Tell us early if it is fragile, heavy, temperature sensitive, age restricted, or restricted for air freight, because that changes the handling and sometimes the carrier.

If a job turns out not to suit us, we will say so rather than take it on and do it badly. That is rarer than it sounds, but it is better heard in the quote than in week three.

Questions sellers ask about bespoke work

Bespoke fulfilment, answered straight

What is bespoke fulfilment?

Any order that cannot be picked, packed and sent as a single item in a standard mailer. In practice that means kits and bundles built from several SKUs, subscription boxes, gift packs and hampers, branded unboxing with inserts or tissue, fragile items needing extra protection, and seasonal runs assembled ahead of a send date.

Do you fulfil subscription boxes?

Yes. A subscription box is the same pack repeated at volume against a send date, so the work sits in the build rather than in the picking. Tell us the box contents, the quantity and the send window, and the build is scheduled before that window rather than on the day.

How much does kitting cost?

Kitting and bundling starts at 50p per kit and is on the published rate card. Gift or fragile wrapping starts at 30p, custom or branded packaging at 15p, and inserts and flyers are 5p each. Those sit on top of the pick and pack rate, which starts at 85p per order.

Can you use my own packaging and inserts?

Yes, and most clients do. Send your own boxes, mailers, tissue, cards or flyers to the warehouse and we will pack into them. They are stored like any other stock, so they are charged at the normal storage rate rather than as a separate fee.

Is there a minimum volume for bespoke work?

No. There is no minimum volume on any part of what we do. A bespoke job at low volume simply costs more per unit than the same job at high volume, because the build takes the same time either way, and the quote shows that rather than hiding it.

Send us the spec and we will price the build

Tell us what the finished pack contains and how many you need. The quote comes back itemised within one working day, with the bespoke work shown as its own line rather than buried in a per-order rate.
